Equipment

  • Oven
  • Casserole Pan
  • Wooden Board
  • Knife
  • Kitchen grater
  • Stovetop pan
  • Kitchen turner
  • Medium Bowl
  • Whisk

Ingredients

For the Bisquick mix (optional)

  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup cold butter, cut into pieces

For the casserole

  • 14 ounces pork sausage
  • 9 ounces Cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups hash brown potatoes
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Chopped parsley and green onion

For the milk mixture to incorporate the Bisquick

  • 1 cup Bisquick baking mix
  • 4 eggs
  • 1.25 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix flour with baking powder, salt, sugar, and butter to create the Bisquick mix flour. You may also use store-bought Bisquick to skip this step.
Start dicing the vegetables (onion and bell pepper) into small pieces.
  • Get your pan out and add oil to saute the diced vegetables. Add the pork sausage to saute along with the vegetables.
  • Use the kitchen turner to break up the small chunks of meat while sauteing it.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C or 356°F and grab your casserole to assemble the dish for baking.
Transfer the cooked sausage to the casserole pan before layering the mixture with hash brown and cheddar cheese. Don’t forget to mix it up with a kitchen turner.
  • To prepare the flour mixture, whisk eggs with milk, salt, and pepper. Introduce the Bisquick mix to your egg concoction and mix it thoroughly.
  • Transfer the Bisquick blend to the casserole with the sauteed sausage and vegetables. Bake the casserole for roughly 40 - 45 minutes. Ideally, the casserole’s surface should be golden brown.
  • Allow the casserole to cool off for about 10 minutes before topping it with freshly chopped parsley or onion for serving.

Notes

  • Take it easy on the salt in the casserole since the Bisquick mix already contains the condiment.
  • Make sure you use freshly shredded cheese since it melts faster than pre-shredded ones.
  • The total time is based on 8 servings.
